English
When we say that the Moon orbits the Earth, we are not being entirely accurate. Actually, the Moon does not orbit the center of the Earth. Rather both bodies orbit their collective center off mass called the Barycenter.
This is similar to a balance point, an off-center balance point like the one you would find if (over your head) you swung a barbell with one end much heavier than the other…
Because the mass of the Earth is 81 times greater than the mass off the Moon, the Barycenter is 81 times closer to the center of the Earth.
This means that the Barycenter is close to 4670 km for the Earth's center, on the line connecting the Earth's and Moon's centers.
Therefore the Moon and Earth revolve together around their "balance point", which lies about 1600 km under the "moonward-most" point of the Earth's surface!
It is the Barycenter of the Earth and Moon wich annually orbits the Sun, while at the same time the Earth and Moon orbit the Barycenter in the shorter period of a sideral month.
Thus their orbits seem to zigzag very slightly as they progress around the Sun.
This meandering motion can be detected by careful observations of the nearby planets against the fixed background of stars in the Celestial Sphere.
